By Anton Roxas Posted Feb 15th 2013
Defending champion Far Eastern University survived a major upset against the University of the Philippines, as they found a way to prevail in a tough five-set match 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 23-25, 15-9 last Thursday, February 14, 2013 in the Men’s Volleyball tournament of UAAP Season 75 held at the Arena in San Juan City.
After the first two sets ended with a 1-1 tie, Tamaraws Head Coach George Pascua interestingly kept his starters on the bench for the entirety of the third and fourth set. Ronald Tonquin, Karl dela Calzada, Arvin Avila, Alexis Faytaren, John Depamaylo and Team Captain Pitrus de Ocampo all watched from the sidelines before returning in the deciding fifth set to close the show.
With the win, FEU remained in contention of that top spot at the end of the elimination round with an 11-2 record. They are scheduled for a showdown against league leading National University (12-1) on Sunday, February 17.
The Fighting Maroons dropped to 2-11.
In the other matchup, De La Salle University disposed of Ateneo de Manila University 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 to improve their chances of securing a Final Four berth. The Green Archers are now tied for third place at 8-5, with Adamson University who also has the same record.
The Blue Eagles suffered their tenth victory of the season against only three wins.
